Walter Cheslock
November 4, 1944 - October 31, 2023
Walter passed peacefully after a short battle with dementia and a 40-year fight with heart disease. He will be missed immensely by his daughter Jennifer (George Buri) and sister Bev (Mike Lesiuk) along with niece and goddaughter Katy and nephew Alex, as well as brothers- and sister-in law and their families. Walter is predeceased by Lynne, his wife of 45 years, older brother Don, and parents Anne Popowich and John.
Walter was born in Selkirk and grew up on a farm in Cloverdale. His passion for education led to a career as a school principal with over 30 years of teaching in Ninette, Amaranth, Minnedosa, and finally Oak Lake, MB where he and Lynne lived most of their lives. An active member of the community, Walter volunteered with the Oak Lake Lions' Club, the ambulance service, and served briefly as mayor. His love of gardening and rototilling for neighbors kept him connected to the land, as well as helping his brother Don with farming. He spent summers working as a crop hail adjuster and made wonderful friends across the prairie provinces. In 2008 he and Lynne moved to Cloverdale where he enjoyed hobby farming, but after Lynne's passing in 2013, life was lonelier. Good times with family and neighbors and winters spent in Arizona brought him great happiness. In 2020 he finally "retired" to a lakeside cottage near Lac du Bonnet to enjoy relaxation and fishing. He will be remembered for his friendliness, generosity and hospitality.
A celebration of life will be held on Friday, November 10 at 11:00 am in the Gilbart Funeral Home in Selkirk, MB. For those unable to attend, the service will be livestreamed with the following link: https://youtube.com/live/dLyU57sEH2o?feature=share In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
