William Karatchuk
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, William (Bill) Karatchuk, on Tuesday, December 10, 2024 at the Selkirk Regional Health Centre at the age of 94 years.
He leaves to mourn his wife, Barbara (Barb) of 72 years, December 12, 1951 (nee Kirkness); sons Larry (Sharon), Brian and Dennis; grandchildren Keenon, Taryn, Patrick (Tessa), Kelly (Jess), Glenn (Amy), and Amanda (Justin); 9 great-grandchildren, Axel, Tyson, Lawson, Hailey, Jadyn, Owen, Navee, Braeden and Madison; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
Dad was predeceased by his parents, William and Anna Karatchuk; sisters, Mary (John) Obirek and Nettie (Steve) Zabogruski; brothers John (Mary) and Mike (Julie); father-in-law Myles Kirkness; mother-in-law Sarah Kirkness; in-laws Verna (Lawson) Spence and Lorna (Jack) Zacharias.
Dad was born March 20, 1930 to William and Anna Karatchuk in Riverton, MB, the youngest of five children.
Dad spent many years as a young man commercial fishing, logging, cooking and barbering in the Interlake area where he met his wife to be Barbara Kirkness. Dad and mom were married on December 12, 1951 at the Christ Church in Selkirk, MB.
Dad (also known as uncle Billy to family) and mom, spent many days with their family and friends at Beaver Creek, MB where they acquired a cottage in 1989, where dad enjoyed hunting and fishing with family and friends.
After retiring and due to age, Dad and mom moved to Riverton Icelandic Lodge, then to Arborg, finally residing in Selkirk. Dad moved to Woodland Courts Assisted Living where he could be near mom at Tudor House. There he could visit mom when able as it was just down the hall.
After becoming ill, Dad was moved to the Selkirk Regional Health Centre where he stayed until his passing which was 2 days before their 73rd anniversary.
A thank you from family and friends and the staff at Tudor House who provided assistance to mom to visit dad prior to his passing. Also thank you to staff at Woodland Courts and Selkirk Regional Health Centre for their care and support.
A celebration of Dad’s life will be held on December 17, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk.
Honorary pallbearers are his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
