George John Sohan

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our husband, dad and grandpa, George John Sohan, on August 30, 2012, at the age of 76.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 47 years, Eva, daughter Carolyn (Derrick) and grandsons James and Matthew, and son Brad (Cheryl and her children Joshua and Renee). He also leaves his brother Jim (Carol), niece Christine, nephew Darren, special cousins, Irene Bader, Ken (Heather) Bochurka, and Joanne Warwick, and in-laws, Emily Yurchi, Karl (Denise) Dern, Jacob (Sylvia) Dern, Edward Dern, Lawrence Dern and their families.  George was predeceased by his father, John in 1968, and mother Mary in 2002.

George was born on April 22, 1936 in Winnipeg Beach and attended school there. Upon completion of schooling, he began working in the family business; beginning in the farm implements dealership in the Interlake, and in 1970, moving to the grocery store in Winnipeg Beach until his retirement in 1996.

Community was important to George. In business, he employed many members of the community. He volunteered with numerous organizations including the Winnipeg Beach Fire Department, Rec Centre, Curling Club, and the Wonderful Winter Weekend, and was an active member of the United Church. He could always be counted on to lend a helping hand.

George had many interests. He enjoyed curling, working in the yard and garden, and watching football. He also enjoyed berry picking, cooking and baking with Eva. He lived his life with quiet humility, but had a boisterous sense of humor and loved to laugh. George loved his furry friends and will be missed by his devoted little companion, Bibi.

George loved traveling to Florida and Barbados for winter family vacations, and then in retirement, RV camping. With Eva, he enjoyed camping in Manitoba in the summers, and became a winter Texan with many friends, old and new, at La Mirada in the Rio Grande Valley.

A United Church Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 8, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. in the Our Lady of the Lake R.C. Church, 2 Church Bay Lane, Winnipeg Beach, with Beth McLean officiating.
